Five U.S. B-52 bombers left the Fairford air base Saturday on what could be their first Persian Gulf combat mission from Britain.

U.S. Air Force officials were not available to confirm whether the B-52s were on a raid and Britain’s Defense Ministry said it could not comment on U.S. operations.

Britain has allowed a limited number of the Vietnam-era bombers to be stationed at Fairford to attack Iraqi targets.
