The government of IRAQ formally severed diplomatic relations with the UNITED STATES three days after announcing plans to cut ties with America and five other countries fighting to oust Iraqi troops from Kuwait. Iraqi Charge d’Affaires Khalid Shewayish presented a diplomatic note to the State Department officially notifying it of the decision. There was no indication when Iraq’s four remaining diplomats might leave. Iraq previously had cut diplomatic ties with the United States after the 1967 Six-Day War between Israel and its Arab neighbors. Relations were restored in 1982.
