British Airways Joins Air-Fare War: British Airways is cutting round-trip airfares by 33% for flights between the United States and Britain and said it would give refunds with two weeks’ notice. The cut brings the peak summer fare on midweek flights between New York and London to $588. British Airways also cut fares between Britain and Chicago, Los Angeles, Maimi and Tampa. Airlines have been stung with cancellations since the Persian Gulf War began. The U.S. recession and higher fuel prices have also hurt carriers. Last week, America West started a fare war among domestic carriers with a three-day promotion.
