The first cholera epidemic in decades has struck nearly 9,000 people in Peru, killing 66, and the European Community today pledged $700,000 in emergency medical aid.

The epidemic, which threatens to spread across Latin America, has swamped hospitals in Peru and alarmed neighboring countries, some of which have banned Peruvian food imports in what experts called a vain attempt to contain the disease’s spread.

The first portion of the EC aid package, $308,000, was to be sent by plane tonight from Amsterdam, the EC’s Executive Commission said.
