This Junior to Get Pressure as a Freshman

Anthony Dorsett Jr., son of 1976 Heisman Trophy winner Tony Dorsett, will attend the University of Pittsburgh, his father’s alma mater, where he plans to be a defensive back.

The younger Dorsett, who reportedly runs 40 yards in 4.5 seconds, played little football until his senior year at J.J. Pearce High in Richardson, Tex. Lightly recruited, he considered West Virginia and USC and visited only Pittsburgh.

For a story in the Pittsburgh Press, F.J. Lucchino asked Dorsett if he felt pressure because of his father’s accomplishments, including 6,082 rushing yards, an NCAA Division I-A four-year-career record.

Said Anthony Dorsett Jr.: “There’d be pressure anywhere because of my father’s name.”

Trivia time: Which team ended the Lakers’ 33-game winning streak in 1972?

Hog heaven: Some worshipers at the First United Methodist Church in Mena, Ark., would have faced a moral dilemma Sunday morning, had it not been for their pragmatic pastor, the Rev. David Thompson.

Because the 11:30 a.m. CST tipoff time of the Arkansas-Nevada Las Vegas game conflicted with his regular 10:50 service, Thompson scheduled a special one for 8:10.

Said Thompson: “I’m really sorry the networks have put ballgames at worship times. But at the same time, I really wanted to give people an opportunity to worship when I had their attention.”

Add Pastor: Thompson told the Associated Press that attendance at his regular service was down by about half, but that accounted for the ones who attended the special service.

Said Thompson: “I know a lot of people wanted to watch the ballgame.”

Depends on the fuel: After his photo-finish victory over Cuba’s Andres Simon in a 60-meter dash at Osaka, Japan, Monday, Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson said:

“My body feels normal, but it’s been (normal) for 27 months. The body’s not just like a car that you can turn on and drive off. It’s going to take a while.”

Dream vacation: New Cleveland Brown Coach Bill Belichick, until recently the New York Giants’ defensive coordinator, reportedly is a stickler for detail.

His wife, Debby, said: “He has files for everything. He even has a file for a trip to Europe that we’ve never taken. For 13 years we’ve been meaning to take this trip, and we’ve never gotten the chance. But we have a great file on it.”

Add Belichick: Former Giant linebacker Harry Carson praised Belichick’s imagination and resourcefulness, and recalled that when Belichick was the Giants’ defensive coordinator, he would conduct team meetings in a soft monotone.

Said Carson: “He was so serious and into it, and we’d end up falling asleep on him.”

A real throwback: Steve Prokop, brother of New York Jet punter Joe Prokop, was one of the winners in Saturday’s all-comers track meet at Mt. San Antonio College.

Prokop, a hammer thrower who formerly competed for Mt. SAC and Azusa Pacific, now lists his affiliation as Team Neanderthal.

Trivia answer: The Milwaukee Bucks beat the Lakers that year on Jan. 9, 120-104.

Quotebook: University of New Mexico 7-foot-2 center Luc Longley, on life in Albuquerque: “It’s difficult to keep any sort of privacy in public.”
