LOS ALAMITOS : Recyclable Trash Percentage Grows

Share

The percentage of recyclable trash collected in Los Alamitos has steadily increased since the city’s curbside recycling program began in October, the City Council was told this week.

Nearly 20% of the trash collected from single-family residences in December--the most recent month for which information is available--was separated by residents and determined to be recyclable, Assistant City Manager Gerard Goedhart said. This compares to 18.2% in November and 16.6% in October, he said.

A state law requires that communities use recycling to reduce by 25% the amount of trash sent to landfills by 1995 and 50% by the year 2000.

Newspapers make up the bulk of the recycled materials collected in the city, accounting for 79% of recyclables for October, November and December.

The recycling program has cost the city about $27,000 so far, with $9,644 recovered from redeeming the recycled materials, Goedhart said.
