UCSD Extends Winning Streak With Victory Over Whittier
The UC San Diego men’s basketball team, ranked fifth in the nation among Division III schools, improved on its school-record winning streak by taking its 12th in a row, 88-70, over host Whittier Tuesday night in a nonconference game. Tim Rapp led the Tritons (20-3) with 27 points and six rebounds, and Gordon McNeil added 11 points.
The Tritons led 49-30 at half and were never threatened.
Point Loma Nazarene College shot just 40% from the field and lost to host Christ College of Irvine, 72-69, in a Golden State Athletic Conference. Rusty Fallin led PLNC (11-16, 3-6) with 18 points, Julious Coleman had 17 and Mark Bulgin had 13. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Despite Shannon Abrams’ 34 points and 21 rebounds, Point Loma Nazarene College lost its first Golden State Althletic Conference game to host Christ College of Irvine, 79-65. Becky Wilson had 17 points and Camille Armijo added 13 for PLNC (18-7, 6-1). CCI improved to 18-5 and 6-1. WOMEN’S TENNIS
SDSU (0-2) was defeated by visiting 11th-ranked Pepperdine, 6-3, in a match at SDSU. Singles winner for the 15th-ranked Aztecs were Eva Olivarez (No. 2) and Claire Bateman (No. 3). At No. 3 doubles, SDSU’s Claire Bateman and Susan Hawke defeated Marina Bottazzi and Marie-Pierre Villani, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. MEN’S TENNIS
USD (1-5) won for the first time this season, defeating BYU, 8-1. Jose Luis Noriega played his first match of the season after returning from Peru, where he played for his native country’s Davis Cup team. Noriega defeated Herman Van De Casteele, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. BYU is 0-4. MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
UC San Diego defeated the visiting University of Laverne, 15-2, 12-15, 15-10, 15-4, in a Pacific Coast Conference game. Gerri Goldstein led UCSD (2-6, 2-2) with 14 kills and Brent Couture had had nine kills. The Tritons’ Renny Werner had 10 blocks. BASEBALL
Cal Poly Pomona (2-5) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh and another in the bottom of the eighth to defeat visiting USD, 6-3. Kevin Chavez (1-0) was the winner. USD is 2-5-1.
Whittier committed eight errors to help visiting Point Loma Nazarene (6-1) to a 15-5 victory. Point Loma’s Jason Huntley went four with a triple and six RBIs. Chris Gunnent (1-0) picked up the win. Whittier is 1-4. SOFTBALL
SDSU (2-0) swept a doubleheader from Loyola Marymount, winning the first game, 12-0, and the second, 7-0. Michelle Wesson (1-0) picked up the win for SDSU in the first game, and Lisa Paretti (1-0) threw a one-hitter for the victory in the second game. SDSU’s Stephanie Chapel was three for four in the second game. Loyola Marymount is 0-7.
