New Radio Service Approved: The Federal Communications Commission approved a new form of radio communication that could compete with cellular telephones. Bloomfield, N.J.-based Fleet Call Inc. won approval to serve New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Dallas and San Francisco. Using low-power transmitters and new technology, the company provides two-way communication for vehicle fleets such as delivery trucks. The cellular phone industry opposed the FCC action.
