WORLD IN BRIEF : NICARAGUA : 4 in Army Sentenced in Missile Sales Case
Four Nicaraguan army officers charged with selling anti-aircraft missiles to Salvadoran rebels were sentenced to 3 1/2-year prison terms by a military court, authorities said. The four confessed earlier this year to selling 28 Soviet-made surface-to-air missiles to rebels of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front. The Salvadoran military said that surface-to-air missiles launched by rebels have been used to shoot down at least five military aircraft. Charges were dropped against two FMLN commanders, 10 other Salvadorans and one Honduran who had been implicated in the illegal sale, according to authorities.
