Senior leader Deng Xiaoping made a rare venture into public to greet Shanghai citizens on the eve of the Chinese lunar new year. The patriarch’s televised appearance, the first time he has been seen in nearly two months, came as Chinese across the country welcomed the Year of the Ram with a barrage of firecrackers. Deng, 86, walked unassisted but appeared shaky and unsteady during his brief appearance, quelling unofficial reports that described him as incapacitated by a serious illness.
