DESERT STORM: DAY 30 : Peace Feelers

Share

Iraq offered for the first time to comply with U.N. demands that it relinquish Kuwait, but said any withdrawal of its forces must be linked to a pullout of allied forces from the region and should be tied to an Israeli withdrawal from occupied lands.

President Bush dismissed the sudden Iraqi peace proposal as a “cruel hoax” and said Desert Storm coalition members agreed the Iraqi offer was “nothing new.” He said military orders remained the same and commanders said bombing of Iraqi troops was continuing in the effort to oust Iraq from Kuwait.Said Bush: “There’s another way for the bloodshed to stop. And that’s for the Iraqi military, and the Iraqi people, to take matters into their own hands, to force Saddam Hussein, the dictator, to step aside and to comply with the United Nations resolutions and then rejoin the family of peace loving nations.”

U.N. Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar said Iraq’s offer deserved careful consideration despite the conditions attached to it.
