Detroit Piston Coach Chuck Daly is expected to be named the 1992 U.S. Olympic basketball team coach in two news conferences today, according to a report in today’s editions of the Detroit News that quotes a U.S. Olympic Committee source who asked to remain anonymous.
USA Basketball said its news conference concerned the selection of the Olympic team’s coach for the 1992 Games in Barcelona, Spain. The Pistons did not announce the purpose of their news conference.
Daly, 60, has led the Pistons to consecutive NBA titles. He has a 62-31 record in the NBA playoffs, the best among active coaches.
The 1992 Olympics will be the first in which NBA players will be allowed to participate. The U.S. team is expected to have nine NBA players and three college players.
