NATION IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Shuttle Mounted on Launching Pad
The shuttle Discovery, buffeted by high winds, was mounted on its oceanside launching pad at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida for blastoff March 9 on a “Star Wars” research mission. It is the first of seven shuttle flights planned for 1991. Workers planned to install experimental Air Force and Strategic Defense Initiative, or “Star Wars,” instruments in Discovery’s cargo bay today, but cold weather could hamper other weekend work at the launching complex. The goal of the mission is to learn more about how to detect rockets in flight.
