The Gulf War has focused attention on Israel’s eastern border with Jordan. Israeli forces are on guard against Iraqi Scud missiles flying over Jordan or even a spread of fighting into Jordan. And Israeli officials have warned that they would not tolerate a second front on ISRAEL’S NORTHERN FRONTIER, where Palestinians fired scores of rockets in Israel’s “security zone” in southern Lebanon. But a U.N. peacekeeping official in the area said the Palestine Liberation Organization has so far refrained from rocketing Israel itself, largely because the 400,000 Shiite Muslims living in the region have pressured Palestinian fighters not to provoke Israeli aerial retaliation.
