Baker on U.S. Rebuilding Iraq After War

As a retired military enlisted man (Army, Navy, Air Force--World War II, Korea, Vietnam), I find unfathomable the comments by Bella Abzug (Platform, Commentary, Feb. 7).

Abzug states that if women want to serve in the armed services, that’s their choice, but that she has a problem with a husband and wife both being sent to war when young children are involved. She further states that these people volunteered to go into a peacetime service, but now that we are at war, one of the parents should be allowed to stay at home.

The old regular Army (and the Marines) had it right--if the Army wanted a soldier to have a wife, they’d issue him one. Are we to train a soldier for years, provide him/her full pay and benefits and then in time of war excuse him/her because of prior civilian commitments? Come on, Bella.
