Eva Twardokens, fighting bronchitis, won the giant slalom with two blistering runs in the U.S. Alpine Ski Championships at Crested Butte, Colo.

Twardokens, 25, of Santa Cruz, had the fastest time in both heats--1 minute 20.81 seconds and 1:19.18--for a combined time of 2:39.99. Wendy Fisher, 19, of Incline Village, Nev., was second in 2:41.90, and Heidi Voelker of Pittsfield, Mass., took third in 2:45.12.

In the men’s slalom, Joe Levins of White Bear Lake, Minn., gave the Midwest region its first men’s national champion in 12 years, pacing both runs to beat Brad King of Canada.

Lyubov Egorova of the Soviet Union won the 30K women’s freestyle cross country race in the World Nordic Ski Championships at Val di Fiemme, Italy, keeping teammate Elena Valbe from winning a fourth gold medal.

Egorova, a 24-year-old from Leningrad, was timed in 1 hour 20 minutes 26.8 seconds.
