Ben Johnson leaned across the finish line to edge Bruny Surin and win the 60 meters in the Canadian indoor track and field championships at Saskatoon, Canada.

Johnson finished with a time of 6.65 seconds, shy of the Canadian record of 6.61 set by Surin in 1989 and far off the world record of 6.48 set by Leroy Burrell on Wednesday in Spain.

Surin, the defending Canadian champion, finished second in 6.66. Atlee Mahorn was third at 6.67, with Donovan Bailey fourth in 6.68 seconds. Three false starts may have slowed the field.

The victory was Johnson’s third in five races since his return to competition last month after a two-year suspension for using performance-enhancing steroids.
