Violeta Chamorro and Corazon Aquino both captured the world’s attention as political widows with enigmatic “people-power” mass appeal, preaching a single principle--national reconciliation.
With the strong support from Nicaraguan and Philippine Roman Catholic churches and, surprisingly, their countries’ former military chiefs, both women won their presidencies overwhelmingly.
But can Violeta and Corazon deliver?
Both women continuously put the blame for their countries’ woes on their predecessors, Daniel Ortega and Ferdinand Marcos, and offer no meaningful solutions other than “have faith in God.”
Not all political widows who represent the ideals of democracy should run for the presidency.
