The SAUDI DESERT has become one giant international SWAP MEET for allied troops. U.S. Army-issue folding cots are treasured, British army jungle-style combat jackets are highly prized and French troops’ rations of sardines, tuna and thick crackers have proved enticing to Americans sick of their Meals Ready to Eat (MREs). Camouflage nets and “alice packs”--the rucksack covers used to keep sand out of weapons--are fair game, but the line is drawn at trading ammunition and weapons.
