From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Postal Service workers dried jet fuel and foam from some of the 14,509 pounds of mail inside a cargo jet that had crashed on takeoff two days earlier at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, killing its two pilots. About 6,500 pounds of mail removed from the wreckage was sent on its way, a postal inspector said. About 300 pounds was damaged and was being handled by the post office’s claims department, he said. About 80% of the rest of the mail was soaked with fuel, he said. After it is dried, it will be mailed or reparations will be paid, the inspector said. Those who do not get their mail must file claims. The two pilots worked for Ryan International Airlines, a subcontractor to Emery Worldwide, which contracts with the postal service for cargo flights.
