Big 3 Car Makers to Idle 41,000: Ford, GM and Chrysler said they will shut down all or parts of about two dozen assembly plants next week because of sluggish demand. The number of workers affected is only two-thirds the number involved in temporary layoffs in January, but still is an indication of a struggling industry. More than half of next week’s layoffs will be at Ford plants, especially truck factories. About 22,050 Ford workers will be affected.
