The Pentagon is awarding the NATIONAL DEFENSE SERVICE MEDAL to all members of the U.S. armed forces in connection with Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The medal goes to everyone who was on active duty after Aug. 2, 1990, whether or not they served in the Gulf. The red, white, blue and gold ribbon is coupled to a circle of brass bearing the insignia of an eagle and the words “National Defense.” The aim is to recognize the “outstanding performance” of the armed forces, officials said.
