Kuwaitis Hear of More Destruction

War-weary Kuwaiti exiles, saddened by news of more destruction at home, said Friday that they are resigned to their country being destroyed before being freed.

“We have strong faith in Allah. When we go back we will just have to rebuild our country again,” said one official of the government-in-exile.

Resignation tinged with faith in ultimate victory was a common reaction in the exile community in Saudi Arabia to U.S. allegations that the Iraqi occupiers were pursuing a scorched earth policy.

“We were prepared for the worst, the complete destruction of our country before it is liberated,” government-in-exile spokesman Hassan Sanada told reporters.

“He is a madman, going the wrong way about everything and claiming he is doing these things for peace.”

He and colleagues say they agree fully with allied war aims--complete and unconditional withdrawal, swiftly, from Kuwait.
