MOGADISHU : Rival Rebels Meet

At least three rival Somali rebel groups that helped oust former President Mohammed Siad Barre from power last month plan a conference in the capital city Thursday--if war doesn’t break out among them first.

Siad Barre escaped when rebels of the United Somali Congress overran the city. Mogadishu businessman Ali Mahdi Mohamed was named president, but the Somali National Movement and the Somali Patriotic Movement objected to the USC’s quick action and the dispute has been punctuated by outbreaks of gunfire in the capital.
