William Howard Taft III, 75, a former diplomat and grandson of a president. Taft’s grandfather was President William Howard Taft. His father, Robert A. Taft Sr., and brother, Robert Jr., both served as Republican senators from Ohio. Taft was ambassador to Ireland from 1953 to 1957. He subsequently served on the State Department’s policy planning staff and as consul general in Lorenco Marques, Mozambique. Taft served much of his later career in Washington before retiring in 1977. In Washington on Saturday of cancer.
