Beginning today, some county water districts will start assessing surcharges for household water usage that exceeds a certain percentage of water used in the past. Here’s the percentage customers must cut back to avoid the surcharges in each water district, what the percentage is based upon and what the surcharge will be:

Water District El Toro Cutback to Avoid Surcharge 80% of what was used last year at the same time. *Surcharge $0.90 Water District Laguna Beach County Cutback to Avoid Surcharge 80% of what was used in the comparable month during fiscal year 1989-1990. *Surcharge $1.96 Water District Newport Beach (City) Water Department Cutback to Avoid Surcharge 80% of what was used in the comparable month during fiscal year 1989-1990. *Surcharge $1.82 Water District San Clemente (City) Water Department Cutback to Avoid Surcharge 70% of average consumption based on district’s own formula. *Surcharge $1.24 Water District Santiago County Cutback to Avoid Surcharge 85% of average consumption based on district’s own formula. *Surcharge $3.30 Water District Serrano Irrigation District Cutback to Avoid Surcharge 80% of average consumption based on district’s own formula. *Surcharge $1.44 Water District South Coast Cutback to Avoid Surcharge 80% of what was used last year at the same time. *Surcharge $1.90 Water District Trabuco Canyon Cutback to Avoid Surcharge 80% for irrigation users, 70% for agriculture users,residential customers must maintain current levels of average consumption based on district’s own formula. *Surcharge $2.30 Water District Santa Margarita Cutback to Avoid Surcharge A cutback to 90% of average consumption based on the district’s own formula is in effect. *Surcharge $1.72 *For each additional billing unit. One billing unit in each water district equals 100 cubic feet or 748 gallons of water .
