Iran offered Thursday to help put out the fires in the more than 500 Kuwaiti oil wells that Iraqi troops put to the torch before retreating, the official Islamic Republic News Agency said in a dispatch monitored in Athens.

Iranian Oil Minister Gholamreza Aghazadeh made the offer in a letter to his Kuwaiti counterpart, saying Iran acquired experience in putting out oil well fires started by the Iraqis during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq War.

He also offered to put out oil well fires in Iraq, where “an undetermined number of wells” are alight.
