Ice Cuts Off Power in New York, Ohio
An ice storm in parts of the Midwest and Northeast Monday cut off electricity to more than 300,000 households as power lines snapped under the weight of more than an inch of frozen precipitation, the National Weather Service reported.
Ice-related damage interrupted power to about 300,000 homes in upper New York state and about 40,000 customers throughout Ohio.
Schools and offices were closed throughout the Northeast as the ice made roads hazardous for motorists. Commuter trains did not run in Cleveland for the first time in years because overhead electrical lines were frozen.
The weather service said that storms pushing northeastward were battering parts of the Midwest and rapidly moving into Pennsylvania, New York and New England.
