Eight Teams Enter Championships

Share

Eight teams officially have entered the 1991 World Championships for the International America’s Cup Class, which will be May 4-11 in San Diego.

Italy and America-3 will each sail two boats. Team Dennis Conner, New Zealand, Japan and France will sail one.

A team from the Soviet Union will participate as an unofficial entrant. Class rules prevent them from sailing officially because their boat is made of aluminum.

In other Cup news, the America’s Cup Trustee Committee ruled that challenging teams are required to name their boat 10 months before the match unless there is mutual consent with the defender. That prevents a team from sailing one boat in the match series and then substituting another boat for the challenger series.

The committee also denied a request by the Italian Yacht Club to conduct foreign wave testing.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

San Diego State center Marty Dow was named second-team all-Western Athletic Conference. Dow, who is averaging 17.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, was the only SDSU player named to the first two teams.

Guard Arthur Massey, who is averaging 15 points, five rebounds and five assists a game, was named honorable mention.

Named first-team all-WAC were Utah forward Josh Grant, Wyoming forward Reggie Slater, Brigham Young forward Steve Schreiner, New Mexico center Luc Longley and and Wyoming guard Maurice Alexander.

Utah’s Rick Majerus was conference coach of the year; Utah’s Grant was player of the year and BYU’s Shawn Bradley was freshman of the year.
