Merlin Leads Way to Cabo San Lucas

Share

The 12-year-old Merlin led the fleet of six ULDB 70s Monday after one full day in the Newport Harbor Yacht Club race to Cabo San Lucas.

Merlin, whose 1979 record for the Transpac race to Hawaii still stands, is competing unofficially for lack of a valid rating certificate. Kirk Wilson of Cabrillo Beach YC took her far offshore to find the fresh wind of approaching storms. She was 612.4 miles from the finish of the 790-mile race, 5.4 miles ahead of Brack Duker’s Evolution.

Among the 20 boats who started Saturday, Robert Lane’s Andrews 56 Medicine Man is the overall leader by position.
