South El Monte : Temporary Substation OKd

Share

At least temporarily, the city will have a sheriff’s substation.

Starting in about six weeks, 13 deputies from the Sheriff’s Department Temple station will use vacant offices in the basement of City Hall. Last week the City Council voted unanimously in favor of the plan, to be in effect for about two years while the Temple station is being renovated.

Only four or five deputies on any one shift will work out of City Hall, said sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Anthony Torres. Some patrol cars will be parked in the civic center lot when they are not in use.

Booking and detention of prisoners will still be done at Temple station, 8838 Las Tunas Drive in Temple City.

The council noted this may be a first step toward a permanent substation, which the city has wanted. Temporary use of the basement will be rent-free. The only expected cost is a slight increase in utilities, which the city will pay.

The Temple station serves Bradbury, Duarte, Rosemead, Temple City, South El Monte and adjacent unincorporated areas.
