The Vietnamese, responding to comments that a Gulf War victory had cured Americans of the “Vietnam syndrome,” said the best way for Washington to accomplish that would be to NORMALIZE RELATIONS WITH HANOI. President Bush said last week that the U.S. success in the Gulf War has dispelled lingering national self-doubt and disunity left from the Vietnam War. “By God, we’ve kicked the Vietnam syndrome once and for all,” he said. A Foreign Ministry spokeswoman in Hanoi told reporters that Vietnamese people feel that normalized relations would be in the best interests of both countries. “That’s also the best remedy to heal the spiritual wounds of the Vietnam War,” she said.
