Chatchai Choonhavan, ousted as prime minister in a bloodless military coup last month, left Tuesday night for exile in Europe.

Chatchai, 71, told reporters before leaving Bangkok’s international airport that he will stay about seven days in England, then travel to Switzerland but plans to return home when things normalize in Thailand.

He was freed Saturday after being detained Feb. 23 by armed forces commanders who said they seized power because Chatchai’s government was corrupt, opposed the military and harbored enemies of the monarchy.
