From Times Staff and Wire Reports
About 5,000 municipal workers in the London borough of Lambeth staged a one-day strike to protest Britain’s widely unpopular poll tax. The strike began just hours after the local council set the poll tax at 590.25 pounds ($1,092) per adult resident and announced budget cuts of 20 million pounds ($37 million), which would throw 600 civic employees out of work. The tax has sparked protests and riots in Britain. Critics say the tax is unfair because it is a flat payment that is not computed on income.
