IBM, Apple, Others Form Industry Group: International Business Machines, Apple Computer and several other high-technology companies are organizing the Interactive Multimedia Assn., an industry group seeking to set standards for personal computers using sound and video. The move may stop a Microsoft Corp. attempt to take over the emerging market for these “multimedia” machines and further illustrates the competition against the software company in recent months. Consultants said the move against Microsoft may also slow the introduction of technologies--as many more companies must now agree on what standards are needed.
