P&G; Wins Slander Suit: Cincinnati-based Procter & Gamble Co. has won $75,000 in a suit against a couple that it accused of spreading false rumors linking it to Satanism. Although the company has won a dozen similar suits since the rumors surfaced in the 1980s, the judgment against James and Linda Newton of Parsons, Kan., is the first to include a damage award. P&G;’s suit in U.S. District Court in Topeka, Kan., identified the Newtons as distributors of household products by Amway, a competitor of P&G.; In addition to damages, the court ordered the couple to refrain from encouraging others to boycott P&G; products.
