World IN BRIEF : IRAQ : U.S. Reports Gains by Kurdish Rebels

The United States reported gains by Kurdish insurgents fighting the regime of President Saddam Hussein in northern Iraq, and Pentagon spokesman Pete Williams accused Baghdad of defying U.S. warnings not to use helicopter gunships against the rebels. In the south, both the government and Shiite rebels claimed control of the Muslim holy cities of Najaf and Karbala.
