Jason Shanker, a senior at Corona del Mar High School, was recently named one of 1,000 finalists in the Jostens Foundation Leader Scholarship Program for 1990-91.

Shanker was one of more than 38,000 high school students nationwide who applied for one of Jostens’ $1,000 scholarships granted annually to 300 students. Scholarship winners will be announced in late April.

Selection of the finalists and winners is based on outstanding achievements in school and community activities, leadership experience and academic excellence.

Jostens’ scholarship program has awarded $2.3 million in scholarships since 1977. Funds for the foundation are provided by Jostens Inc., a provider of products and services for youth, education, sports award and recognition markets.

Amanda Cramp, a junior at the Orange County High School of the Arts, recently was awarded the Gellman scholarship for her outstanding achievement in dance.

Cramp is primarily involved with ballet and is active in the school’s classical dance department. She also appeared in the Long Beach Ballet’s production of “The Nutcracker.”

Her $250 scholarship through Dance in Action, a local dance organization, will help pay for summer lessons at a ballet school.

Teachers from a number of dance studios nominate students for the scholarship, after which a panel reviews the nominees and selects a winner.

Finalists for the 1991 Jewish Young Leaders in Sports awards will be recognized at the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on June 2 at the Hyatt Regency Irvine. The winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Israel to study at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
