An inmate at the federal penitentiary in Lompoc has been convicted of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of another inmate, a Port Hueneme man.

A federal jury in Los Angeles found Fernando Perez Bustillo, 46, guilty in the July 29, 1988, death of Von Allen Gilmore, 38.

Bustillo, also convicted of assault on prison officers and possession of a knife, will be sentenced June 19. He faces life imprisonment without possibility of parole, said Assistant U.S. Atty. Charles Kreindler.

The killing occurred when Bustillo, who had a longstanding hatred of homosexuals, went on a rampage after a quarrel with two homosexual inmates, Kreindler said.

Bustillo charged into the cell of one of the inmates and began stabbing him with a homemade knife, the prosecutor said.

Gilmore, a fourth inmate, encountered Bustillo and attempted to disarm him. Bustillo stabbed him in the heart, killing him instantly, Kreindler said.

Bustillo, who was serving an 8-year sentence for counterfeiting $50 bills, claimed that a prison guard had given him the knife, Kreindler said.

Gilmore was convicted of assault in 1984 and was serving a 10-year sentence for stabbing his wife in the back 15 times with a penknife, he said.
