By a mere one-hundredth of a second, Italian star Alberto Tomba beat Norway’s Ole Christian Furuseth in the final men’s giant slalom of the World Cup season Thursday at Waterville Valley, N.H.. Tomba was third after the opening run, 0.32 of a second behind Furuseth and 0.22 behind Austria’s Rudi Nierlich.

Tomba blasted around--and many times through--the 55 gates on the Mount Tecumseh course in 1 minute 10.26 seconds. That gave him a two-run time of 2:26.56.
