From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The government announced amnesty for 1,828 anti-apartheid activists and five white right-wing extremists. The move, part of a program of racial and political reforms, brought to at least 4,802 the number amnestied from charges of armed action against minority rule. It grew out of an accord last August with the African National Congress in which the ANC agreed to suspend its low-level guerrilla campaign. Recently, the ANC complained that the government was not moving quickly enough to free political prisoners and said ANC-government talks could be derailed.
