Quilting isn’t just a hobby, it’s an obsession, says Helen Carson, president of the South Bay Quilters Guild. “I work at it every day,” she said. “I have quilts on the beds, quilt tablecloths and quilt wall pieces.”

Carson and the 225 other guild members will share their excitement about quilting today at their annual show, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at West High School in Torrance. The physically disabled and their escorts may see the show between 9 and 10 a.m.

Everything from miniature quilts to creations for king-size beds will be included in a display of 108 quilts made by guild members. Several quilt shops will also display their wares.

This year’s show is dedicated to Claire Moses, a longtime guild member who died of cancer last year. Fourteen quilts she made over a number of years will be shown. The show will also feature the Country America Magazine Quilt, which was made of blocks submitted by women across the country.

Visitors will be able to take home 40 miniature wall quilts that will be auctioned. There will also be a drawing for a queen-size quilt that was hand-pieced by all guild members. Done in various shades of blue, the panels depict the guild’s sailboat logo. Proceeds from the drawing will benefit the New Life Beginnings Shelter for homeless pregnant women.

Admission to the show is by a $4 donation, which supports guild activities. The high school is at 20401 Victor St. at Del Amo Boulevard.
