Soviet Shooter Cherkasova Sets Two Records at Chino
Valentina Cherkasova of the Soviet Union set two world records Saturday in the women’s 10-meter air rifle event and won her second gold medal on the final day of the five-day World Cup USA shooting competition at the Prado Trio Ranges in Chino.
Cherkasova had a score of 399 points of a possible 400 in the 40-shot preliminary round, breaking the world record held by two Americans, Deena Wigger and Patty Spurgin. In the 10-shot final, she shot 101.8 for a total match record of 500.8 out of a possible 509.
Cherkasova also won the women’s three-position standard rifle event earlier in the week.
The Soviet Union finished with a competition-best 12 medals. The United States and South Korea were second with four each, and Australia had three.
