SAINTS: As backers of Pierre Toussaint begin efforts to canonize the former slave (E1), supporters of Father Junipero Serra are eyeing the final hurdle to sainthood. . . . Serra, who founded Mission San Juan Capistrano in 1776, was beatified after the Vatican found that a miracle took place through his intercession. . . . Sainthood requires a second miracle, and there are several possibilities now under investigation, says Father Noel Francis Moholy, Serra’s “campaign manager.” His goal? A halo by 1992, to coincide with the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ landing.
