Whittier : Pollution Control Work to Begin at Canyon Landfill

Share

The Whittier City Council has voted to pay more than $156,000 to a Costa Mesa company to improve pollution safety measures at the city’s Savage Canyon landfill.

Gillespie Construction Inc. was the low bidder for a system designed to keep trash-contaminated liquids from escaping the 90-acre site. The collection system is part of a $5-million renovation designed to bring the landfill into compliance with local, state and federal regulations. There is no pollution hazard to area residents from the landfill, said Neil Hudson, director of public works.

Other parts of the modernization have included perimeter fencing, a gas emission control system and a new drainage system. The work will be completed in about six months, Hudson said. The landfill has an expected life of 30 years and is the destination for most of the city’s residential and commercial waste. The dump is not licensed to accept hazardous waste.

The city financed the renovation by selling bonds secured by the landfill’s revenues.
