Compton : Council Approves Design of City Flag, 2 Official Songs
Compton has its own city flag and two official songs now that the City Council approved them by a 3-1 vote Tuesday.
The new blue flag bears the city’s emblem--the Martin Luther King Jr. Monument in the Civic Plaza--and the words love, peace and friendship in yellow letters.
One of the adopted songs, “Theme Song of Compton,” is bilingual and may be the first such Spanish-English city song in the state, said composer and longtime Compton resident Luis Concepcion. The other official song was written several years ago by resident Charles Graham, who recently died, according to City Clerk Charles Davis. Davis said he did not remember the name of the song.
Mayor Pro Tem Maxcy D. Filer voted against adoption of the flag. He said that a flag bearing only the city’s emblem was approved many years ago by the Cultural Commission but that the commission never received funds to have the flag made.
