Fairfax : Senior Health-Care Grant

Share

A community center in the Fairfax District has been awarded a $116,963 grant to identify impoverished elderly people who need help to meet their health-care needs.

The money from the Alliance Healthcare Foundation of San Diego will pay for a questionnaire designed to increase the client base of the Sylvia Olshan Health Center, which is on the premises of the Frieda Mohr Multiservice Center on Fairfax Avenue.

The health center now serves about 1,500 senior citizens. The grant is expected to identify at least 500 new clients.

“The frail elderly represent one of the greatest challenges for the health-care system,” said Dr. Ruth Riedel, executive director of the foundation.

“It’s difficult to identify those in need because social, economic and mental health barriers prevent older adults from seeking health care, and the most needy also tend to be the most isolated,” she said.

The foundation is funded by the Community Care Network, an employer-sponsored health management program.
