World IN BRIEF : VATICAN CITY : Pontiff Takes Part in Last Supper Rite
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Pope John Paul II washed and kissed the feet of 12 priests on Holy Thursday to commemorate Jesus’ gesture of humility toward his apostles at the Last Supper. The pontiff presided at the Mass in Rome’s Basilica of St. John’s in Lateran, in his capacity as bishop of Rome, beginning four days of Holy Week activities leading up to Easter. During the Mass, Catholics were asked to perform an act of charity as Christ had done. In addition, a special collection was taken up for victims of the Persian Gulf War.
