WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A 23-year-old woman who contracted AIDS from her dentist reached an out-of-court settlement with his insurance company Thursday. Terms were not disclosed.
Kimberly Bergalis was the victim in the federal Centers for Disease Control’s first reported case of a health-care professional passing the disease to a patient. Since her case came to light on July 26, 1990, at least two other people who contracted the AIDS virus from the same dentist have come forward.
Bergalis has appeared nationally on the “Oprah Winfrey Show” and has done several news interviews to push for mandatory testing of people in the health-care field.
