Plane Seized in Election Protest
A hijacker seized an Air Algeria jet in an election protest Sunday but later gave up, releasing all passengers and crew members.
The suspect, who was thought to have grenades, surrendered after several hours of talks with Interior Minister Mohammed Salah Mohammedi.
Before he gave up, the government made public his statement about forthcoming elections. He said Algerians are not yet mature enough to take part in the voting, according to a report on Algerian Radio.
About 50 passengers were aboard the plane, which was on a domestic flight from Bechar in southwest Algeria.
